Why Large-Format Graphics Don’t Need Crop Marks

For artwork supplied for large-format print, crop marks are generally not required and, in modern automated production workflows, should not be included.

That statement often surprises designers and artworkers who have spent years preparing files for commercial print. In sectors such as brochure printing, leaflets, business cards and stationery, crop marks are a standard part of the production workflow and are frequently added automatically when exporting PDFs from Adobe InDesign or Illustrator.

Large-format print production works differently. Modern production workflows rely on automated software, digital finishing systems and machine-controlled cutting equipment rather than visual trim guides. As a result, crop marks are generally unnecessary and must be removed before production can begin.

This article explains why crop marks are generally unnecessary for large-format graphics, how modern large-format production workflows differ from traditional commercial print, and how to prepare artwork correctly for large-format print.

What Are Crop Marks Used For?

Most designers and artworkers will already be familiar with crop marks, so there is no need to explain them in detail.

In commercial print production, crop marks are used as visual trim guides to indicate where a printed item should be cut after printing. In these environments, they serve a clear production purpose and are a standard part of the finishing process.

The confusion arises because many designers are taught to include crop marks as standard practice, even though large-format graphics are typically produced using very different equipment and finishing methods.

Why Designers Keep Adding Crop Marks

One reason this misconception persists is that many designers export artwork using standard PDF presets such as Press Quality or other commercial print settings.

In our experience, the vast majority of crop marks supplied with large-format artwork are not added intentionally. They are usually the result of PDF export settings that have been carried over from commercial print workflows, where crop marks and other printer’s marks are often expected.

For artwork supplied to XG, we recommend using the following PDF export presets:

  • Adobe InDesign: High Quality Print
  • Adobe Illustrator: Illustrator Default

Do not use the Press Quality preset when exporting large-format artwork. This preset is intended for commercial print workflows and can introduce printer’s marks, crop marks and other settings that are not suitable for large-format production.

Before exporting, check the Marks and Bleeds section of the PDF export settings and ensure that:

  • Crop Marks are unchecked
  • Bleed Marks are unchecked
  • Registration Marks are unchecked
  • Colour Bars are unchecked
  • Page Information is unchecked
  • The required document bleed settings are enabled where applicable

In simple terms, large-format PDFs should contain the artwork and any required bleed, but no printer’s marks.

Because crop marks are so common in commercial print, they can easily go unnoticed during artwork checking. For large-format graphics, this creates unnecessary work for both the designer and the production team.

How Modern Large-Format Finishing Works

The reason crop marks are not needed in large-format print comes down to how graphics are finished.

Today’s large-format production environments are driven by digital workflow systems rather than visual trimming guides. Large-format graphics are typically finished using automated cutting systems, CNC routers, laser cutters and other digitally controlled equipment.

Production software reads information directly from the artwork file, including:

  • Finished dimensions
  • Scale
  • Bleed allowances
  • Cutting paths
  • Production specifications

This information is then passed directly to automated finishing equipment.

For example, a flatbed cutter can use digital registration systems and cutting paths to accurately trim a graphic without any reliance on printed crop marks. The same principle applies to CNC routing and laser-cutting workflows.

The machine already knows exactly where the finished edge should be.

The accuracy comes from the production data, artwork dimensions and cutting paths, not from marks printed around the outside of the artwork.

Why XG Does Not Require Crop Marks

At XG, artwork is processed using production systems that work directly from the dimensions and data contained within the file itself.

As a result, crop marks serve no practical purpose within our workflow and can create unnecessary pre-production work.

When crop marks are included, artwork may need additional checking to confirm the correct finished size and remove any unnecessary printer’s marks before production can proceed.

In some cases, crop marks can also become embedded within the PDF, requiring further artwork intervention.

Supplying clean artwork files without crop marks helps streamline the production process, reduces the need for amendments and allows jobs to move through pre-production more efficiently.

Common Problems Caused by Crop Marks

Crop Marks Can Accidentally Appear on Finished Graphics

One of the most obvious risks is that crop marks can become visible on the finished product.

This can happen when:

  • Crop marks extend into the bleed area
  • Bleed has been supplied incorrectly
  • Marks have been embedded into the artwork
  • PDF export settings have been configured incorrectly

Although artwork checks are designed to identify these issues, removing unnecessary crop marks eliminates the risk entirely.

Embedded Crop Marks Create Additional Artwork Work

Depending on the export settings used, crop marks can become embedded within the PDF structure and may not be easily removable.

This creates additional artwork handling before production can proceed and can delay approval if clarification is required.

Crop Marks Can Confuse Artwork Dimensions

Large-format production software works from the artwork dimensions themselves, not from the crop marks around them.

When crop marks extend beyond the artboard, confusion can arise regarding the actual finished size of the graphic.

This is particularly common when multiple graphics are being produced as part of a larger project or where artwork dimensions are being checked manually.

Additional Checks Slow Production

The cleaner the artwork supplied, the faster it can move through artwork checking, approval and manufacturing. Removing crop marks is one simple way to streamline the process.

What About Bleed?

Crop marks and bleed are often discussed together, which can lead some people to assume that if crop marks are removed, bleed is no longer necessary.

That is not the case.

Bleed remains an important part of large-format artwork preparation.

Where bleed is required, artwork should extend beyond the finished size to allow for production tolerances during cutting and finishing.

Importantly, bleed should contain genuine image or background content. Adding white space around the edge of a design does not create usable bleed.

Bleed requirements vary depending on the product, material and finishing method being used.

Some Print Providers May Still Request Crop Marks

While crop marks are unnecessary for XG’s production workflow, some print providers may still request them as part of their artwork specifications.

This is usually due to differences in equipment, finishing methods or production processes.

For this reason, it is always important to follow the artwork guidelines provided by the company producing the work.

The artwork dimensions themselves define the finished size. Crop marks should not be required to determine this.

For artwork supplied to XG, the recommended approach is straightforward:

  • Create artwork at the correct finished size or agreed scale
  • Include the required bleed
  • Ensure bleed contains image or background content
  • Export PDFs without crop marks or printer’s marks
  • Check artwork dimensions before export
  • Follow any product-specific artwork guidance

Keeping files simple and accurate helps reduce amendments, improve workflow efficiency and minimise production delays.
