Materials that Matter

Materials that Matter

At XG, we understand that the materials we choose have a lasting impact — not just on print quality and performance but on the environment. That’s why we focus on materials that matter, making responsible sourcing decisions that reflect our broader sustainability goals. From championing non-PVC products to embracing biodegradable options and nearshore supply chains, our material choices are a key part of how we reduce our footprint and support our clients in doing the same.

Championing Non-PVC Materials

PVC has long been a staple in print media due to its flexibility and cost-effectiveness, but it comes at an environmental cost. At XG, we are actively shifting away from PVC-based substrates in favour of more sustainable alternatives.
We offer a wide range of PVC-free materials across banners, backdrops, and display graphics. These include options made from polyester-based textiles and other composite materials that offer excellent printability and durability without the environmental impact of PVC. Many of these materials also meet REACH and Oeko-Tex® standards, supporting safer, cleaner production.

Biodegradable Materials for a Smarter End of Life

While recyclability is essential, we believe biodegradability offers a vital safety net for graphics used in temporary applications — especially outdoors. Our biodegradable fabric, suitable for flags, Heras fence banners, and crowd barrier covers, offers dual functionality:
  • It is fully recyclable within traditional polyester recycling streams.
  • If it ends up in unmanaged waste, landfill, or the ocean, it biodegrades significantly faster than standard polyester.
Tested under recognised international standards, this fabric demonstrates a 94% breakdown in marine environments over 1,362 days, and 91% in soil within 1,171 days. This ensures it retains performance in use, yet breaks down responsibly when no longer needed.
“Our biodegradable fabric offers clients a responsible alternative for short-term display use, combining performance with a built-in environmental safeguard.”

Nearshore Sourcing: Prioritising UK & European Supply Chains

The origin of our materials matters just as much as their composition. Nearshore sourcing — particularly within the UK and Europe — allows us to:

  • Reduce transport emissions by shortening delivery distances
  • Ensure traceability and stronger environmental oversight
  • Support suppliers who uphold ethical and sustainability standards

One of our textile partners, for example, manufactures entirely within Europe using renewable energy, recycled yarns, and biodegradable fibres — setting a new benchmark for responsible textile production.

Recyclable Solutions with a Real Impact

Recyclability remains a cornerstone of sustainable material use. At XG, we back this up with tangible initiatives:
  • A zero-to-landfill policy for in-house waste
  • An accredited recycling programme for client returns
  • Traceable, auditable processes aligned with waste accreditation schemes
We’re also offering a take-back services for selected fabric products, making it easier for clients to return used graphics for recycling — keeping them out of landfill and supporting closed-loop practices.
