The primary uses for floor graphics are for functional and promotional purposes:
Functional graphics can be used to communicate important messages to users of a space, such as define areas on a floor for particular purposes, convey important safety warnings, direct traffic and so on.
Promotional graphics can be used to bring attention to a particular product or promotion and are especially useful in retail settings where there is limited empty wall space for a more conventional message. The attention-grabbing nature of a well-designed floor graphic has greater impact than a more conventional wall mounted poster.
Things to consider...
How long does your graphic need to last?
We have a range of solutions, from products designed for just a short promotion, with emphasis on easy removal after use, up to a durable aluminium film that can last in excess of 1 year.
Where will it be used?
It is critical to know the type of flooring which the product will be applied, and the type and volume of traffic passing across it. Within our range, we can accommodate many popular flooring solutions such as:
Short pile carpet, Vinyl, Wood, Laminate, Tile, Stone, Brick, Concrete and Asphalt
What about the design?
- Graphics should be bold and simple. Avoid complicated messages which require users to stop in order to read them.
- If you do not know the colour of the surface your graphics are going on, consider adding a contrasting keyline around the edge to ensure they stand out against the floor.
- Shape - we can cut to almost any shape, but complex shapes and sharp corners can cause the graphic to fail in use. Use simple shapes and always use radiused corners rather than sharp points.
- Clear film and white ink - for some indoor hard floor applications we can print on a clear base film. When combined with our white ink printing capabilities, we can produce interesting effects. This also enables us to overcome some of the limitations of using simple cut shapes- Complex shaped images can be printed onto a clear background allowing a softer shape to be cut around the edge of the film.
- Viewing angle - remember, users will be looking at your graphics from an angle as they approach them. This may need to be considered in your design.
What about the location?
This can affect both the effectiveness of your graphic and its durability.
A good use of promotional graphics is to direct customers to a particular product, so positioning directly in front of the appropriate shelf or location is of great benefit, assisted by additional graphics leading your audience to that location.
For functional graphics, where traffic is being directed, graphics should be positioned to allow time to react to the information. If queues are likely to build up and obscure important messages, they may need to be repeated. Or positioned to avoid the queues.
Are they easy to install?
Installation has a huge impact upon the durability of your graphic. Within our range, requirements vary, so please ensure the correct information specific to each product is followed. In general:
- Consider the location of the graphic as per information above
- Ensure the existing flooring is of a suitable type for the graphic you have ordered
- Clean the surface thoroughly, removing all dirt, dust, loose particles and contaminants such as floor polish and oily residues
- Ensure the surface is dry and in good condition
- Observer minimum application temperatures- remember that in cold conditions, surface temperatures may be lower than air temperatures.
- Adhesive strength builds after application. Allow appropriate time before graphics are subjected to traffic
- Ensure the correct tools are used, specific to the film you are using
- Pay particular attention to edges, corners and joins when applying the graphic
- After installation, ensure appropriate clean methods are used when maintaining graphics.
How durable are floor graphics?
- Our graphics will all withstand normal pedestrian traffic and wheeled loads.
- Some outdoor solutions will tolerate light vehicles passing over them.
- All films will be damaged by having hard items dragged across them. Try to avoid locations where this is Likely to happen, especially in industrial and workshop locations.
- Outdoor graphics will tolerate light vehicles rolling across them but can be damaged by the twisting force of a tyre if a large steering input is made in the vehicle whilst it is on the graphic.
- Avoid locations where vehicles will be stopping, starting and changing direction.
- Where possible try to size and position graphics such that car tyres are likely to pass either side of a graphic rather than directly across it.
What Slip Rating do I need?
There are a number of factors that will determine what slip rating you require. Depending on the product, will provide you with either a R Rating or a PTV Rating.
Click here to understand the different Slip Rating tests and the different options available
Slip Resistance
The below information provides a general summary of slip ratings for floor graphic products.
It is important to carefully consider all the conditions a floor graphic will be subjected to – and not just wet or dry situations. Contaminates like oil will affect floor friction more so than water, floors at a gradient are also different to level floors, and the amount or type of traffic endured by the graphic will impact the durability.
*Floor graphics must be safe in use. Our products are all rated according to the DIN 51130 standard for testing the slip resistance of floor coverings.
What are slip-ratings and why are they important?
Slip ratings and certifications determine the suitability for a given product in a specific environment.
They are important to keep consumers safe and avoid any potential hazards.
Why is it important to understand slip certifications?
It’s important to fully understand slip certifications as this will have massive impact on the product you
decide to use.
What different certifications are available?
In the UK and Europe there are 2 certifications used to rate the product and advise its suitability for
floor applications.
- DIN 51130:2010 - R Rating
- BS 7976-2/EN13036-4 - Pendulum Test (PTV)
What is an R Rating?
Many European flooring manufacturers and floor graphics material manufacturers use ramp-type tests to classify the slip resistance of their products before sale. Such tests are generally carried out using German National Standard test method (DIN 51130:2010).
The DIN 51130 ramp test is designed to simulate the conditions commonly encountered in typical workplace slip accidents. DIN 51130 uses heavily soled EN:ISO 20345 safety boots with motor oil contamination.
The test method involves an operator walking forwards and backwards over a contaminated flooring sample. The inclination of the sample is increased gradually until the operator slips. The average angle of inclination at which slip occurs is used to calculate the slip rating of the flooring.
The result is based on the R (Ramp) scale which runs from R9 to R13, where R9 is a high risk of slip and R13 is the lowest risk. Floor surfaces that are classified by the DIN 51130 standard as R9 (or in some instances R10) could be slippery when used in wet or greasy conditions.
What do the R Ratings mean?
The R scale starts at R9 which is the lowest rating and progresses through increasing values to R13. It is important to note that surfaces classified at R9 and R10 will still be slippery when used in wet or greasy conditions.
DIN 51130 R-Value Slip Resistance Classification
R Rating | R9 | R10 | R11 | R12 | R13 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Slip Angle | 6-10° | 10-19° | 19-27° | 27-35° | 35°+ |
R Rating Guide
RAMP Rating | Description |
---|---|
R9 | Suitable for use in dry indoor areas such as offices |
R10 | Suitable for areas that are kept mostly dry but have potential for spillages such as supermarkets, hospital corridors and some light industrial situations. |
R11 | Can be used in areas that can get wet such as bathrooms, food serving areas and sheltered external paths. |
R12 | Suitable for commercial kitchens, workshops, food processing plants, outdoor areas and sloping pathways such as disabled access ramps |
R13 | Suitable for swimming pool surrounds, steep slopes and work areas subject to wet and slippery contaminants, for example oil. |
What is a PVT Rating?
The pendulum test is a method that involves a swinging arm, with a rubber slider mounted on the end that sweeps over the test area.
There are two standard sliders, slider 96 (4S) represents average pedestrian footwear and slider 55 (TRL) represents barefoot floor conditions. The friction of the flooring has a direct and measurable effect on the Pendulum Test Value (PTV) given. The test is carried out first in dry conditions and
then after contamination with water.
Research has confirmed that the Pendulum Test Value (PTV) is a more reliable and accurate method for evaluating slip resistance. As a result, the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and many insurance companies have adopted this as a standard test method for assessing slip resistance.
What do the PTV Ratings mean?
The PTV (Pendulum Test Values) are listed in a scale from 0 to 100 with 100 being the most slip resistant. The minimum slip resistance value considered safe for walking on in wet conditions is 36 PTV.
BS 7976-2 / EN 13036-4 Slip Resistance Classification
Pedulum Test Value (PTV) | 0-24 | 25-35 | 36-74 | 75+ |
---|---|---|---|---|
Classification | High Slip Potential | Moderate Slip Potential | Low Slip Potential | Extremely Low Risk |
PTV Rating Guide
Pendulum Test Value - PTV | Description |
---|---|
0-24 | Suitable for use in dry indoor areas such as offices |
25-35 | Suitable for areas that are kept mostly dry but have potential for spillages such as supermarkets, hospital corridors and some light industrial situations. |
36-74 | Can be used in areas that can get wet such as bathrooms, food serving areas and sheltered external paths. |
Suitable for commercial kitchens, workshops, food processing plants, outdoor areas and sloping pathways such as disabled access ramps | |
76+ | Suitable for swimming pool surrounds, steep slopes and work areas subject to wet and slippery contaminants, for example oil. |
PTV vs R Rating
Pendulum Test method versus Ramp Test method
The following able is intended as a guide only and does not represent a direct correlation of the rating from the German standard (DIN 51130) to the European standard (EN 13036-4).
DIN 51130 R9 to R13 ratings | EN 13036-4 Pendulum Test Value (PTV) | Likelihood of slip injury |
---|---|---|
R9 | 11 to 18 PTV | Very Poor - Slip injury almost certain to occur |
R10 | 18 to 34 PTV | Poor - Slip injury likely to occur |
R11 | 34 to 51 PTV | Moderate - Slip injury may occur |
R12 | 51 to 70 PTV | Low - Slip injury unlikely to occur |
R13 | 70+ PTV | Extremely Low - Slip injury rare to occur |
The testing methods are different according to their specific norms and the values are not comparable.
