Client Case Study – TFS Graphic production

Client Case Study - TFS Graphic Production

Exhibition stand design and build company

Background: Client was looking for a reliable new supplier for Tension Fabric exhibition graphics to support their growing business offering around 60 bespoke, modular and shell scheme exhibition stands per year.

Objective: The objective was to support the client by offering high quality of service & consistency of product and most importantly fitment for the graphics which would be produced for a range of modular systems including BeMatrix, Tecna T3 & Wall Mount F sections

Our approach: Our approach was to discuss the key failures of the previous supplier and focus on explaining how we can combat most, if not all those issues and put in place service level agreements that the client could use to help manage their clients expectations and lead times.

Solution: Our solution was to ensure our client knows how to supply artwork and orders in a consistent way to minimise any delays in processing jobs. This includes using very simple but effective methods of correctly sizing the numerous different TFS frame systems.

To ensure consistency, we use tried and tested quality fabrics and production methods. Dye sub printing delivers the best result for the exhibition market. Options of materials and production methods were made and agreed with a focus on 3 core products of Blockout, Frontlit and Backlit fabrics.

Our tailored service level proposal included simple square meter pricing which were comparable with the previous trade supplier, agreeing standard production lead times that were better than previous supplier along with a commitment to work together on any requirements for special actions such as short lead times or price support for larger project.

Thanks to our industry leading pre production artwork processing methods, we were able to offer an extra layer of front loaded quality assurance which many of our competitors are not able to offer.

Result: As a result, our client has complete faith in using XG as their print partner for TFS graphics and in our last trading year over more than 50 projects we had a zero failure rate in relation to amongst other things: Lead times or graphic fitment.

…with a graphics overhaul by XG Group

XG Group has been proud to be an incumbent supplier of Silverstone Circuits for a number of years, collaborating with them to create branding that won’t go unnoticed. Whether it’s their regular signage or specialist event branding, we’ve loved seeing how their brand has evolved.

Most recently, Silverstone has begun the process of rebranding with a contemporary new look. This requires a complete overhaul for their first Silverstone Drive experience of the year. As the first comprehensive project we’ve worked with Silverstone on using their new branding, we couldn’t wait to get started!

The collaboration station

Where do we start when it comes to rebranding a renowned Silverstone event like the Silverstone Drive Experience? There is a huge array of products used at the circuits for customer information, way finding and general branding. With a set budget in mind, we were able to survey a branding wish list that Silverstone and gain inspiration for potential solutions.

The team at XG set to create visuals of the suggested designs, aligning with their brand guidelines and tone of voice. Each product comes with its own price point, enabling Silverstone Drive to prioritise how they would like to spend their budget. All items requested were able to be fully produced in-house, including:

Good to go

The first event of the season was a huge success, and the branding looked great (if we do say so ourselves!).  As always, it was a real pleasure to work with the team at Silverstone and we look forward to seeing our products be used time and time again.

Kirsty Woodward, Marketing Manager for Silverstone Drive, commented: From our first meeting with the team they were able to take our conceptual ideas and realise them. As one of the first on-site applications of our new brand, their design team worked excellently in channelling the new look and feel and tone of voice. Despite a short lead time the whole team worked with us to make the install achievable for our first retail weekend. It’s been fantastic to see the application being interacted with by customers getting hands-on with the new brand for the first time, whilst totally lifting the space to create a true sense of arrival for our guests.

Carbon Footprint

Are TFS Fabrics Environmentally friendly?

Are TFS Fabrics Environmentally friendly?

Going Green with TFS Fabrics:

Carbon Footprint

The carbon footprint for TFS graphics is extremely low compared with other traditional display materials: They use less raw material, weigh less and pack down better for easy, low-cost transport, they are 100% PET so totally PVC and Phthalate free are recyclable. This may be enough to satisfy the green box tickers but those who really care will need to know more so they can decide how green a product is. We believe that our TFS fabrics are probably some of the most eco friendly products on the market, here’s why:

Recycling of polyester and plastic is technically still in its infancy and costs money. There are several ways to reprocess a product to label it ‘recycled’ but that does not automatically make it more environmentally friendly.

For example, products made in the “Far East” will generally have a much higher carbon footprint than those made in Europe. This is due to longer transport routes and much lower levels of energy and environmental controls being made throughout the whole supply chain.

It is also important to question what products are recycled from and how they are recycled. For example, fabric yarns can be made from by-products of other manufacturing processes which would normally be reused anyway but by diverting them into yarn manufacturing they can be labelled as ‘recycled’. More ecologically conscious recycled PET’s are those made from product that are either ocean bound or ocean waste however these are considerably more expensive and therefore it is not realistic to expect truly environmentally friendly recycled products to be available without a premium being paid.

Although we are slowly introducing recycled yarns into our fabrics, we are doing this with our eyes open, by mixing recycled and raw yarns to keep costs down and by supporting new technical manufacturing processes that use knit patterns that are denser but result in lighter weight and therefore use less yarn. These processes are slower and come at a slight premium but are without question more environmentally friendly.

As a commitment to sustainability, we choose to use Dye Sub TFS printable fabrics that are manufactured in Germany in a factory that focuses on using the highest possible environmental standards with a Going Green Initiative that includes using industry and world leading technology and processes committed to minimising carbon footprint. Our decision to use a European manufacturer comes with additional assurances that they are produced under European legislation and from a fully validated source.

Branded Heras Fence Covers for Events

Fabric Airmesh VS PVC banner

Fabric Airmesh VS PVC banner

Which substrate is right for your project?

XG Group offer a wide range of substrates for you to choose from depending on which product best suits your needs. Two popular options are fabric airmesh and PVC banner, offering different benefits suited to your needs. We recommend fabric airmesh for uses such as banners, backdrops, and any kind of promotional branding needed for relatively short-term events. PVC on the other hand is great for the likes of heras fencing, or in environments such as construction sites where it needs to be robust against wear and tear. We can help you choose the right option for your needs, but here’s a brief comparison to help you get a good impression of their benefits.

Sustainability

Did you know we offer PVC-free banner substrates which is a great replacement to their PVC counterparts? If you want something in PVC but want to be a little softer on the environment, give PVC-free a go. This is complimented using UV-printing, a process which quickly sets ink onto the substrate without any chemicals being evaporated into the atmosphere. When opting for fabric airmesh, we use dye sublimation printing. Dye sublimation printing is a solvent-free method that uses an in-line curing process to evaporate the water leaving the dye ink cured into the fabric . Either option has their own benefits, but you can find out more about dye sub and UV printing here. Fabric airmesh also has the bonus of being made with a recycled yarn, so your graphics are made from previously-loved products that are given a second lease of life. You can read more about sustainability in the print industry here.

Durability

Both fabric airmesh and PVC require different care and suit different uses in order for you to achieve their maximum lifespan. PVC is a very strong material, which many people already know and trust for its resilience. We recommend PVC mesh for uses such as heras fencing on construction sites or other high-impact environments, as it can withstand tough weather for longer-term than fabric airmesh might. Fabric airmesh is ideal for quick branding such as festivals or other outdoor events, when you need shorter-term promotional usage.

Handleability

Fabric airmesh is lightweight and air permeable making it easy to fold, store, transport and set up. It’s ease of handling makes it ideal for taking out and about for short-term displays, whereas PVC’s heavier weight requires more management to install. This is more time-consuming but being a more durable material for long-term use makes it more beneficial for certain uses.

But one thing's the same...

The quality! Our experts can advise you on the best substrate for your needs if you’re unsure which to choose. Simply get in touch on 01280 707 180 or email us at sales@xg-group.co.uk

3 Misconceptions Of Sustainability

3 Misconceptions Of Sustainability

We're myth-busting to help you make better choices

Sustainability is a welcomed part of the print industry, and you’ll have seen how XG Group is embracing it in our products and processes. However, with the latest IPCC reports there is an increased concern around what we can do to help and the impact it really has, with misinformation being prominent online. Let us help by myth-busting three of the most common misconceptions around sustainability.

'Recycled materials are the best option'

It’s very common to see claims of materials being made from 100% recycled materials. On face value, this is exactly what is wanted for a sustainable future. Sadly, many of these claims from long-distance suppliers go unfounded and unquestioned.  We recommend taking a few things into consideration over stats that seem too good to be true. Is the supplier local, naturally reducing its carbon footprint? Can you contact them regarding their claims on recycled material, or do they have a sustainability statement? It’s important to remember that the print industry as a whole is progressing to greener practices, which is led by supply and demand. As demand for more eco-friendly solutions increases, the quicker the print industry will respond. In the meantime, it can mean big promises with minimum impact. It’s an integral part of XG Group to equip our customers with the information they need to make the right choices in products for their needs, including their sustainability.

'Printing creates a lot of waste'

We use dye sub and UV printing techniques, which are both very eco-friendly solutions. Neither of these options release harmful solvents into the atmosphere, and both can be applied to materials quickly and efficiently using their own unique curing processes. UV printing doesn’t need a primer, letting it use less products and saving on additional products and processes. UV printing dries using photo-initiators in the ink that are solidified by LED UV lamps, which means nothing gets evaporated into the atmosphere. Direct dye sub printing, on the other hand, uses an in-line curing process that reaches temperatures of up to 180°c which evaporates the water in the ink. This method only creates a small amount of water-vapour in excess. Find out more on dye sub and UV printing here.

'Plastic is an absolute no-go!'

It’s true that the use of plastic should be minimised, but there are ways to use plastic in a way that is more sustainable. For example, single-type plastics such as polyester are one of the easiest materials to recycle. Careful consideration about the use of your XG products can also play a huge factor in their eco-friendliness, such as choosing durable materials which can last long-term, or the safe storage to prolong their appearance. Many products, such as our roller-banners and TFS frames, have interchangeable graphics which lets you replace and recycle the visuals without wasting the structure. Using plastic based products can still be used in a more sustainable way, keeping their production and longevity in mind.

The journey of your tension fabric

The journey of your tension fabric

Taking your graphics from production-house, to you!

You want a bold, branding statement for an upcoming event to entice potential clients and get your company seen- and we have just the thing! Tension Fabric Systems (TFS) come in all sizes and styles, ideal to be utilised in numerous environments but is unsurprisingly proving popular in the events industry. But what happens once you place your TFS order with XG Group? Let’s look at the journey.

1) You've found a specialist in fabric tension graphics

XG Group are experts in creating flawlessly printed graphics for tension fabric systems. We’ve been producing TFS graphics for over 10 years with one of the highest customer satisfaction rates on the market. Whether you’re looking for a whole new system or a graphic for your current one, all it takes is a quick chat with our customer service team to get your new fabric to your doorstep.

2) Fitted to your needs

Did you know we do graphics to fit every tension fabric system on the market? All we need to know is the type of frame and the outer frame measurement to make you’re a new graphic. If you want to update the fabric of your current system, we can make it in a new material in a choice of fabrics for back lit, block out or front lit.

3) It's getting a little tense!

…On the fabric front, that is. Tension fabric needs precise measuring to give you the flawless fit you expect in a TFS frame. The size of graphic for your tension fabric system is carefully calculated with our own formula, taking into consideration the percentage of stretch in the material and the size of frame, to ensure you get the best fit for your frame. This measurement is then automatically laser-cut for the highest accuracy possible, and sewn using expert equipment that lines the fabric to the frame precisely. It’s this combination of our experience and high-tech machinery which guarantees you the quality you expect.

4) Get colour creative

We use both UV and digital dye sub-printing for our products, most often using digital dye sub printing for our tension fabric. This method is dyed into the product itself, using an in-line process to cure the inks that reaches high temperatures. This method evaporates the water in the ink, leaving pure vibrant colour on your fabric. We take Pantone colours from your artwork which is automatically colour-matched and converted to CMYK values, ensuring you get the best full colour print possible. If you’d like to find out more about our colour-matching process, read all about it here.

5) You got this

We can quickly despatch anywhere in the UK, so you’ll have your expertly printed TFS frame in no time. The graphics come neatly boxed ready for you to install, which takes a matter of minutes. You also won’t have to worry about creases or wrinkles, as these will drop out under tension. However, if you have any questions about the process, simply get in touch and we’ll be more than happy to help.

Artwork guidelines | XG Group

Do’s and don’ts of print-ready artwork

Do’s and don’ts of print-ready artwork

What do we need from you to bring your creations to life?

Our expertise in large-format printing enables us to turn your ideas into a reality. Once you’ve found a product that fits your project, we need production-ready artwork to bring it to life. This can sound daunting, but with a little know-how you’ll have your designs at your doorstep in no time! To make things easy, here’s the key do’s and don’ts of making your artwork print-ready.

Do: Provide your artwork as a vector PDF.

This is because vector files can be resized to almost any scale without pixilation. If you’re struggling to find a vector file for your logo, it would likely have been used for your previous print projects, so ask the person who is responsible for your usual design work.

Don’t: Send a JPEG, PNG or GIF file. We can’t take spot colours from these (see here for more information on our colour-picking process) and they are often low-quality.

Do: Provide high-resolution artwork if a vector is not available.

If you’re unsure whether the resolution of your artwork is high enough, an easy way to check is by multiplying it on your screen to its output size. For example, if you supply your imagery at 10%, expand the image by 1000% and it will give you an idea of whether it will be pixelated or not. See our images for an example of pixilation.

Don’t: Supply artwork in Microsoft PowerPoint or Word.  These low-resolution formats aren’t designed to be used in large-format printing and sadly can’t create the quality or finish you desire.

Do: Check if there’s a downloadable template for your product.

This can be found in the ‘Artwork & Templates’ section of the product page, but sometimes your templates will be custom-made to your needs in which case contact us to discuss in more detail.

Don’t: Use a different template to what we provide. This may not fit your product and can’t be used for XG products.

Do: Trust us with your artwork

If you need to vectorise your imagery or help with the artwork, we have you covered. If you don’t have vector imagery, or you don’t have the capacity to create your artwork, you won’t miss out on personalised XG products. We can assist you with creating print-ready artwork for an additional fee.

Don’t: Compromise the look of your final product with low-quality artwork. If you aren’t sure whether your artwork is suitable, all you need to do is get in touch and we can advise you further.

Do: Look at our artwork guide for more details.

Our artwork guide provides a more in-depth explanation of what we need to make your artwork ‘print-ready’.

Don’t: Worry if this sounds confusingWe have years of experience in creating high-quality large-format print products and can assure you on every step it takes to get your products picture-perfect! Talk to our experts on 01280 707 180 or email us at sales@xg-group.co.uk

Ideal short-term solutions

Window graphics don’t have to be a long-term commitment. If you are looking to apply the graphics indoors, why not look at our reusable self-adhesive graphicsParticularly in retail, window graphics are a great focal point to catch the attention of passers-by, giving you the opportunity to share your offers and events with a wider audienceremaining strong and secure when you apply them but easy to remove and replace when neededThis PVC-free option can be repositioned numerous times, so you can reapply them wherever needed for your promotions and communications whilst trusting them to stay securely where you position them.

Large format printed stadium graphics | XG Group

Your guide to large-format stadium graphics

Your guide to large-format stadium graphics

Stay on-the-ball with your branding!

Stadiums offer huge opportunities to get your brand noticed, with potentially thousands of viewers being exposed to advertisements at one time. Whether it’s Wembley or your local venue, stadium graphics can kick-off a new aspect to your advertising.

So what’s the best option for you to showcase your business at stadiums? We have a few options to help you engage your audience:

On-field visuals

Why not choose something that is right in the thick of it? On-field products such as centre circles are ideal for sponsors to promote and engage, being a focal point in stadiums.

Choose a centre circle or pitch banner for an interactive visual that is lightweight to handle and easy to store. Whether you’re looking to display a consistent message or emblem at every home game, or a one-off messages from sponsors, these make excellent photo opportunities and can enhance the atmosphere of the game!

In the crowd

Stadium seat covers aren’t just resorted to filling empty seats or dividing audiences – they can act as another banner for sponsors and brands, too. Our seat covers are made in a durable airmesh fabric, which can be made to any shape or size. This airmesh is made from a PVC-free fabric, which along with the seat covers reusability makes it a cost-effective and eco-friendly option for your branding.

Crowd flags are a fan-favourite at large events, being a dynamic and engaging feature to show team support. Being produced in a lightweight material and supplied in a holdall ensures that they can be easily stored away when not in use, ready for the next big event.

Portable signage

Flags can come in a whole range of shapes, sizes and styles. From our feather flags, wind dancer flags or custom-print flags, these eye-catching features can be assembled anywhere for maximum attention, whilst being easy to pack up and get on the move.

Other items that can help bring your stadium graphics to life are crowd barrier covers, ideal in their use to direct large audiences and communicate important messaging or reinforce team branding. Similarly, we’ve seen toblerone-shaped signage turn into a portable or temporary staple at stadiums thanks to its flatpack nature. This signage solution is quick to assemble and deconstruct, made from a single sheet of fluted Correx board expertly printed in full colour. Whether you’re lining the outskirts of a pitch or providing crowd guidance in public areas, toblerone-shaped signage is quick becoming a must-have for stadiums!

Sustainable printing at XG Group

Sustainability in print: where to begin

Sustainability in print: where to begin

Creating a sustainable print industry

As experts in graphics, XG Group take it as our responsibility to have the most up-to-date information in print solutions to enable our clients to make the best choices for their company. We recognise that this includes integrating sustainable solutions in our products and practices for a future of greener printing.

Balancing new technology, our clients’ needs and our drive for a greener future is a process we are taking step by step, consciously considering the long-term effect we have on our environment- something we have already made substantial advances on.

We’ve already made substantial changes to the way we work, including:

New recycled (and recyclable!) products

We have developed our Dragonfly fabric range which uses post-consumer, waste-recycled yarn. This new collection is available in frontlit display, blockout, flag and airmesh fabrics, making it easier to choose a green solution for your products.

Not only is this product an environmentally friendly alternative for your projects, but it is also created in a world-leading eco-friendly factory. Made in Europe, the supplier has gone above and beyond to make sure their practices are energy efficient, even introducing a tree-planting carbon offset programme. Many other green materials are sourced from large manufacturers in the far east who make unverifiable eco-friendly claims and increased logistical carbon footprint.

We’re so confident in our new Dragonfly fabric, we’re replacing old products with this version at no extra price as a step into making sustainable the new normal.

Be PVC-free

Some products that you would normally choose in a PVC material are now available completely PVC-free, including self-adhesive, semi-rigid and rigid substrate products as well as complete range of PVC-free banners in front lit, double-sided and mesh. These are the same high-quality you expect from XG, but designed with end-of-life disposal in mind.

PVC is notoriously harsh on the environment, being difficult to recycle. These PVC-free banner options are made from polyester scrim and PA water-based coating, which is biodegradable but also easy to recycle. If you’d like more information on PVC-free banners, visit our blog.

Smarter th-inking

We no longer use solvent-based inks, and our sublimation inks are certified to the Oeko-Tex 100 standard. You’ll find most of our work involves either dye sublimation printing or UV printing, which are two of the more eco-friendly print mediums available.

Both of these options are considerably more environmentally friendly than traditional methods of printing. Dye sub printing uses water-based inks cured by heat. This method of printing can only be used on polyester-based fabrics, which are recyclable and durable which naturally decreases their carbon footprint. In most cases we print directly to the fabric, eliminating the large amounts of paper waste generated by the more traditional dye-sub transfer process.

On the other hand, our UV printers can print to a wide range of rigid and flexible materials. Ink is almost totally VOC-free and is cured, in most cases, by highly energy efficient LED lamps which consume minimal energy and ensure no solvents are evaporated into the atmosphere. Compare both of these processes here.

Landfill? Land empty!

The print industry as a whole is working on improving the recyclability of its products. Working with our waste management partners, we can ensure that none of our waste ends up in landfill. Managing to recycle or reuse a large number of our products, anything that does go to waste is disposed of in an energy from waste centre. This method burns waste and uses the heat and steam to fuel homes and businesses. Read more about how energy from waste works.

XG Group for Silverstone Grand Prix

No corners cut: the Silverstone branding experience

No corners cut: the Silverstone branding experience

XG Group worked at the heart of the British Grand Prix event

The British Grand Prix event this weekend at Silverstone has been electric to watch. But aside from being captivated by the performance of the drivers, we were proud to see our work in action! Teaming with the Silverstone events team and Match hospitality, XG Group has produced the materials they need to get over the finish line.

We don’t need to say why this weekend at Silverstone was a big deal. This sell-out experience has been the largest attended sporting events in the world for the last couple of years, meaning nothing could be overlooked when creating a show-stopping collection of branding and fan information materials.

The right direction

XG Group produced all off-track infrastructure signage and way-finding products for the event. This mainly features maps, car parking signage and directional information, welcome signage. However, we also created their important health and safety messaging and gate entry kits which included flags, branded event tents, crowd barrier covers and information sign structures. We also rebranded the iconic Brooklands and Woodcote Hospitality buildings and suites into the Legends and Heritage Clubs and Cops corner into a festival-style enclosure aptly named Trackside Hospitality.

Although this isn’t the first time we’ve collaborated with Silverstone for a branding overhaul, check out our last project with Silverstone Drive here.

It all adds up

The volume of Silverstone is hard to comprehend, but there are many branded features that play an important part in such a renown event. Tension fabric frames of all sizes, heras fence branding, self-adhesive vinyl’s and branded hospitality vehicles are just some of the features we produced.

The sign of a good sign is for it to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, boosting brand recognition and being accessible when needed. So whether it’s a feather flag, the car park directions or the banners, being expertly branded and clearly designed lets the products integrate into the event flawlessly.

No project too big

Being the incumbent supplier for Silverstone’s large-format sign and graphics requirements over this event was a lot of fun- and a lot of responsibility! Many event and production managers juggle numerous suppliers for their large-format printing, which can put pressure on budgets and add to your ever-growing to-do list. We produce everything in-house and offer a comprehensive range of products and services, so you can trust everything is being taken care of under one roof.
